We've been quite busy lately organizing the layout and setting up fish tanks. So busy that our daphnia culture was neglected. Due to the lack of care, when it was finally given the attention it needed, we were left with only 3 adult daphnias.

Instead of giving up on the cultures, we placed the three in a small betta tank we had laying around and hoped that they would somehow reproduce. Sad to say, one of the adult daphnia died leaving only two of them swimming around the tank.

The next day a new tiny daphnia emerged making them a trio once more. When checked in the evening, a number of tiny daphnias were added to the group. An exciting comeback for the long lost daphnias! Look for them at the bottom left corner of the picture below. The tiny specks of pink are them.

In time we are hoping to finally release starters for you guys who are patiently waiting. Be sure to watch out for our next daphnia update!

DIY Anubias Trickle Farm Update

Hello there pet mates! Welcome back to our blog. Here's a quick update on the DIY Anubias Trickle Farm we made last week. The water level in the reservoir (a non functioning refrigerator which we reused) was dropping pretty rapidly so instead of being convenient, it was a trouble for us to be adding water to the reservoir every morning. The water loss was high because most of the splash from the trickle was not caught by the side of the catch basin but outside of it instead. To resolve the issue, we lowered the trickle pipes and the base platform where the plants was placed. This ensured that the water was mostly recovered and returned to the system. Another problem was with clogging. The holes on the trickle piping often get clogged with algae or other debris so the best way to fix it was by using a screwdriver. Daphnia Magna Update (Sept 2013)

Hello there! Here’s an update on the Daphnia Magna culture I had shared with you on a previous blog post and so far there’s nothing new except for tiny daphnia magna babies sticking on the tank wall. I’d post a picture of them but the camera couldn’t capture them. I still have the same problem with the temperature. It still is around 80°F - 85°F and hopefully it wouldn’t really affect the reproduction rate of the daphnias. I removed the Red Cherry Shrimp recently and placed a few Ramshorn snails instead as I read that a few snails in the culture tank of daphnias would help.
